1. Background
Born into a military family three generations deep: a general grandfather, a colonel father, a major uncle. Daily physical training from age eight; young-cadet academy at thirteen. In 2011, when he was seventeen, his father was killed in a post-Circum-Pacific stabilization operation. Commissioned in 2014 with highest honors, he flew as a junior officer through the Emmeria–Estovakia War, including the operations that liberated his own city. Afterward he served as a tactical officer and advanced combat instructor until 2025, when the newly chartered ISAF Revival Initiative recruited him as its experimental squadron leader and senior multinational doctrine instructor.
He goes by James to separate himself from Victor, his grandfather's name and the symbol of expectations he believes he cannot meet.
2. Psychology
Dominant trait: hypercontrol, built on the conviction that if everything follows the plan, no one dies. He processes emotion only afterward, never in real time. His perfectionism comes from fear of failure, and he knows it is paralyzing. He treats relationships as tactical weaknesses while privately wanting connection.
Formative event. In 2011, three months after his father's death, Thorne commanded a cadet training exercise in which another cadet improvised an unauthorized maneuver and seriously injured a third. The inquiry cleared him. He never cleared himself. He fused two contradictory guilts: that more rigidity on his part would have prevented the injury, and that less rigidity on his father's part might have kept his father alive. The contradiction drives his perfectionism.
Resulting bias: emotion is weakness and protocol is the only guarantor of survival; any room for feeling or improvisation gets people killed. The bias makes the unit lethal and makes him unreachable.
Operational prognosis. The most reliable commander in the unit under defined conditions, and the most brittle outside them. Operation GLASS FERRY (October 2028) showed he can override his own rigidity for the length of one word, when a subordinate he trusts supplies the read and Eirhei translates it into something a commander can act on. The unresolved risk is the case where the improvisation must be his alone, with nobody to supply the read and nobody to translate, or where an override he authorizes kills someone. Against MINOZIS this is acute: he is exactly the commander the doctrine wants, and exactly the commander an enemy would paralyze by widening the gap between the correct order and the cost of giving it.
3. Voice
Short, formal, militarized. No contractions, no slang, flat affect in all conditions. His orders carry his feelings in compressed form, which is why Eirhei translates them: "Maintain formation" means I am worried and I trust you.
4. Anchor
His grandfather's mechanical pocket watch, carried on every duty rotation, with a miniature metal squadron insignia hidden inside. He has told no one. Eirhei knows because she once saw him polishing it.
He also keeps a personal diary, now eight volumes, in which he processes everything he will not show. He memorizes every member's birthday, fears and preferences while refusing to acknowledge it, and privately confirms that each returned safely after every mission.
5. Aircraft and Playstyle
The F-35C rewards exactly what he has built his life around: sensor fusion over instinct, information dominance over improvisation, the engagement won before the merge. He flies it flawlessly. His strength is never being surprised, which makes him, by construction, the pilot least prepared for the fight the doctrine did not anticipate.
| Gameplay element | Thorne |
|---|---|
| POV mechanic | Command Picture: expanded sensor-fusion display; can designate targets for all wingmen at once |
| Squadron command | Formation orders resolve faster when Thorne is leading |
| Pressure profile | Load rises when a valid order would cause friendly or civilian harm; at high Load, his order prompts lag and the "abort" option is pre-selected |
| Relief | Eirhei's Translate command |
6. Arc
| Mission | Beat |
|---|---|
| M01 Four of a Kind | Marsh pulls him off a missile. He publicly acknowledges a tactical error for the first time. |
| M02 Glass Ferry | "Cleared." One word against his own doctrine. |
| M05 Shrinkage | He has the aircraft in sight and must order the flight to let it go, because doctrine says pursuit is what it wants. He gives the correct order and hates it. |
| M07 Thirty Kilometers | He signs the Tier 3 authorization and writes in the margin that he was briefed. |
| M09 Anchor in the Storm | He holds the squadron dark for forty minutes while the aircraft refuels below. When the moment comes, nobody can translate for him. He gives the order himself. |
| Final circle | He does not pass. For the first time he talks about his father: one sentence. |
